Naomi Findlay brings a wealth of experience in interior design, project management, and styling, coupled with a deep passion for imparting knowledge to others. We spoke with Naomi about her latest project, Branxton Bank, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. A huge undertaking with the results being nothing short of a testament to Naomi’s passion for design.

Naomi Findlay is a seasoned renovator, having transformed over 120 homes and commercial spaces. As a renowned renovation educator, she lives and breathes the world of building and interiors, sharing her expertise to help others craft bespoke, healthy, and functional spaces. Naomi says, “As an interior designer, my journey into the realm of transforming spaces began with a passion for creating atmospheres that speak volumes. It’s all about function, form, and nature – designs that not only look good and work well but also make you feel good.”

The 1939 Bank of New South Wales Building and Residence in Branxton

With a special affinity for rural properties, Naomi’s innovative “weathered to wonderful” concept breathes new life into rundown country buildings, showcasing her passion for revitalising spaces with a touch of charm and functionality.  When she found the old 1939 Bank of New South Wales building in regional Branxton, she knew she had found the perfect canvas to weave her magic. “The Branxton Bank home holds a special place in my portfolio, not just for its visual appeal but also for the journey it took to bring it to life. Honouring the heritage of the space was paramount in my design considerations. It was about seamlessly blending the old with the new, paying homage to its roots while creating a truly unique and fitting cohesive look and feel where every detail was considered.”

The design style for Branxton Bank was inspired by the imagery of hunting lodges, infused with Naomi’s trademark touch of femininity.  The goal was to be bold, yet respectful to the heritage of the building.

The Branxton Bank design aesthetic is characterised by striking bold blues, luxurious marbles, and timeless gold accents, evoking an atmosphere of sophistication. Seamlessly blending vintage discoveries with contemporary comforts, the space exudes charm and elegance. From the grandeur of oversized chandeliers and golden wall sconces illuminating the dining room, to the impeccably equipped kitchen ideal for crafting elaborate feasts or hosting refined morning teas and brunches, every detail is meticulously curated to create an unforgettable ambiance.

Naomi comments, “The colour palette and textures in the wet spaces were chosen to continue the vibe of the living space into the practical areas. It was about creating a lifestyle feel, not just a functional space. When it comes to finishes and products, I would never go without classic quality tapware and fixtures that make the bathroom and kitchen spaces feel as wonderful to be in as the styled living spaces.”

When it comes to finishes and products, I would never go without classic quality tapware and fixtures that make the bathroom and kitchen spaces feel as wonderful to be in as the styled living spaces.

For this reason, Naomi chose the Phoenix Cromford collection in Brushed Gold throughout the property.  A collection that perfectly encapsulated Naomi’s vision for Branxton Bank.  The Phoenix in-house design team has thoughtfully crafted a collection of tapware and mixers, showers and accessories that reflect modern-day sensibilities. Pared back and uncomplicated in design, with a nod to history in their finer detail.

“’When it came to choosing tapware, the Phoenix Cromford collection in Brushed Gold was an obvious choice. How could you go past it? Quality, class, beauty, and versatility—all wrapped up in one stunning collection. Creating a cohesive look through tapware is a huge choice. It’s about tying together the bathrooms, kitchen, showers, and accessories to ensure a harmonious flow throughout the space.”

Naomi has specified Phoenix products in many of her renovation projects over the years and she speaks highly of her experience.  “As a designer, I need to know that it will turn up, that it will be amazing, that I can use it across many styles and many looks and feels, and that the quality is there for the long term. Plus, it helps when the Phoenix team are such a delight to work with.”

We asked Naomi about the greatest challenge she faced in renovating this old bank property. “As for challenges and joys, well, let’s just say dealing with a double brick cavity heritage home with original wiring and pipes was quite the adventure—but overcoming those obstacles made the end result all the more satisfying.”
