Case study: Velo apartments
Named after the French word for ‘bike’ to reflect its cyclist friendly inner-city location, Velo is a nine-storey building of 61 apartments in Perth’s Northbridge area, designed and developed by Baltinas.
Project overview
The project was created with sustainability in mind, and has solar rooftop panels, rooftop catchments for water harvesting and waterwise landscaping.

Interior design approach
“Velo’s tiered façade is ever changing with the play on light and shadow, yet soft with the cascading greenery from the open-air walkways and winter gardens balconies that create an urban oasis,” explains Barry Baltinas, managing director, Baltinas.
“We wanted to move away from typical ‘hotel-corridor’ feel walkways and closed in spaces that we see in many apartment buildings and offer central common spaces that enjoy an abundance of natural light, sustainable gardens, cross flow ventilation and utilise passive energies such as water harvesting, electric car charges (which at the time of Velo’s conception no other development was including) and photovoltaic panels.”
Velo’s interiors are contemporary, sleek and neutral, offering a timeless, long lasting design aesthetic.

Selecting tapware
For Velo, Baltinas chose Phoenix’s Vivid Slimline Sink Mixer, Vivid Slimline Basin Mixer and Radii accessories in matte black, which “added to the edge and modern feel of the interiors” says Baltinas.
Vivid Slimline Sink Mixer
“We pushed the boundaries with the interiors, offering all black kitchens which at the time buyers had not seen being done. We worked closely with Phoenix from the start of the project – they understood the project’s look and feel and connected with the sustainability approach.”
