Phoenix takes 5 with… SJB’s Ljiljana Gazevic
As part of Phoenix Tapware’s new interview series with key designers, architects, builders and plumbers, we take five minutes with Ljiljana Gazevic, director at SJB, to chat about her career, inspiration and current design trends.
How did you get started in interior design?
Initially I studied industrial design, which gave me the base understanding of three-dimensional objects – soon I was intrigued with larger volume and how the objects relate to the space, so I continued on to study interior design.
After predominately working on corporate fit out projects in the early 1990s, I joined SJB Interiors some 25 years ago and become a director in 2006. Over this time the company has evolved a lot and grown into a mid-size studio.
What does a typical day look like for you at SJB?
For me, a typical day starts by reviewing priorities, having discussions with the team on the status of projects and responding to the many requirements including those of our clients, contractors, and suppliers, all of whom are contributing to our creative process.

What are your favourite types of projects to work on?
I do appreciate the opportunity to work and deliver a variety of projects, however my favourite types are high-end residential followed by hotel projects. It is very satisfying seeing my residential clients enjoying the spaces that we have created for them.
What do you find to be most rewarding about being a designer?
As with many other creative professions, it comes with both challenges and rewards along the way. But the most rewarding is forming close relationships and trust with clients, and the ability to contribute to the outcomes of the project. Opportunities to travel, explore design directions and collaborate with likeminded professionals are also very satisfying.

What currently inspires you and your work?
The current situation is very extraordinary and very challenging for all of us. It is a time to reflect and revaluate our previous experiences. Currently I am connected to nature and draw inspiration from the ever-changing sceneries.
What are the greatest or most important lessons you have learned along the way in your career?
There are many lessons, but the most important to me is to trust your first instinct and idea and to not negotiate with yourself.

What kinds of trends are you seeing in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries?
We are seeing new design directions, including the use of natural stone as a feature material in combination with textured timbers or paint finishes with intricate metal detailing. Integration of highly developed appliances complimented by refined, newly designed lines of tapware and accessories available in many metal finishes are other trends we are seeing.
